Statement by Dr. Robert Hoatson of Road to Recovery, Inc.

Road to Recovery, Inc., a non-profit charity based in New Jersey that has assisted over 5,000 victims of sexual abuse and their families since 2003 and continues to advocate, in particular, for those who have been sexually abused by Catholic clergy, is very disappointed in Greenville, SC, Catholic pastor Fr. Jay Scott Newman who criticized an alleged innocent childhood victim of the Bishop of Charleston, SC, Robert  Guglielmone.  Fr. Newman’s uninformed and insensitive homily of August 15, 2019, should prompt him to apologize to the alleged victim who has been re-victimized and re-traumatized.  Fr. Newman’s role as priest and pastor is not to automatically support his bishop; rather, he should be calling for a fair and just investigation of the allegation, keeping in mind that childhood sexual abuse victims of clergy deserve respect, support, and prayers.
